Protecting Your Lawn Equipment from the Elements

Eliminating all your lawn care equipment and making room in your garage for the next colder and drier weather might not be a terrible idea. Storing snow shovels is an unpredictable task. You can leave a lawn mower outside all winter, but it's probably not the best idea. Consider the following advice to ensure your lawnmower is in top shape for the spring.

Never store gasoline in a storage unit; doing so is against the law because gas is dangerous.

• With the engine running for approximately ten minutes, circulate the fuel tank with a fuel stabilizer to empty the gasoline. Drain the fuel tank once the engine has cooled down. Ensure your safety by making gloves. Disconnect the spark plugs to prevent the mower from accidentally starting while you work on it. Remove the blade, wash it with water, and sharpen it if needed. Put a pan and trap under the mower if it has a four-cycle engine. Turn the mower on its side with the carburetor and air filter facing up. Remove the reservoir plug and tilt the mower until the oil drains from the pan. After all the oil has been drained, replace the plug. Remove dirt and grass from the outside and mower deck by scrapping. Replace the mower blade, then:

• Invert the mower to access the oil tank;

• Fill the tank with the oil specified by your product's handbook;

• Properly recycle or dispose of the old oil. Unplug the power source. A new paper air filter with the edges facing out is the way to go. If your filter is foam, you can wash it in detergent and warm water. Use compressed air to remove debris or dirt from the cooling fins. Finally, replace the spark plug.

Use compressed air to remove any debris or dirt from the cooling fins. Finally, replace the spark plug. Once you’ve finished all that, unhook the handles, fold the mower, and clear the area around the cables. Then, load it into your vehicle’s truck. You may wish to invest in a climate-controlled storage unit to prolong the mower's life.
